There are several types of eye inflammation which may be allergic or infective. Due to the recent virus pandemic, it is useful for you to be watchful of the type of conjunctivitis you have. If you experience a red eye that has some of the following viral characteristics, you should visit a COVID19 testing site instead of your usual GP or optometrist –
- the conjunctivitis appears to be contageous, and may spread between the eyes and within the family
- the conjunctiva appears to be diffuse pinkish-red, painful and produces watery discharge
- the surface of the lower conjunctiva appears to be very red with granular bumpy lesions
- you have fever or flu-like symptoms, or has recently travelled overseas
If you are unsure, you can always contact your local doctor or optometrist and they can try and assist over the phone. Currently, Medicare does subsidise some costs when you have an appointment with your GP over the phone.
